Blood donors needed to replenish critically low supply after Helene

posted in: Mississippi News | 0

After spending most of the summer with a low blood supply, American Red Cross workers are scrambling to restock critically low reserves in the ongoing devastation of Hurricane Helene and the expected impact of Hurricane Milton.

Since making landfall in late September, Helene and its aftermath have led to the cancellation of more than 100 blood drives – causing thousands of blood and platelet donations to go uncollected.

Red Cross officials said that blood transfusions are essential with so many having urgent medical needs, making donations in the Southeast crucial to keeping the nationwide network stocked. The organization operates through a national inventory, moving supplies to the most needed areas.

Those who donate blood, platelets, or plasma during October will get a $10 Amazon gift card and be entered into a drawing to win one of three $5,000 gift cards. Donors outside the areas affected by Helene are particularly encouraged to give.
