Brandon police chief ousted by city officials

The city of Brandon is in search of a new police chief following the termination of Wayne Dearman.

During a Monday meeting, the Board of Aldermen voted to fire the police chief after his 13 months of service as the head of the department.

“Throughout my time as chief of police, I, along with our officers, have worked diligently to serve our community, but we have faced significant challenges,” Dearman said. “Even through those challenges, we were able to enhance safety and build strong relationships between the police department and our community, including the youth at each of the five schools in Brandon.”

City officials have not yet released any reasoning for Dearman’s firing. Dearman began his tenure in October 2022 after former police chief William Thompson retired.
