An officer with the Brandon Police Department has received “significant injuries” from a shootout that occurred early on Thursday morning.

The shootout, which took place in the Crossgates neighborhood, was prompted after police responded to a call reporting a possible hostage situation on Terrapin Hill Road at approximately 1:30 a.m.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that a man had taken a woman hostage after a domestic dispute and had barricaded the two inside the residence.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI) released that the subject immediately began firing shots at police, resulting in the injury of one officer.

Additional agencies, including the Rankin County Sheriff’s Department, Pearl Police, and at least one SWAT team have since responded to the location of the standoff.

Hours later, police convinced the man to release the woman from the house. According to the MBI, the man is still barricaded in the residence with unknown injuries at this time.

The injured officer is currently being treated at a local hospital.
