Broadway in Jackson is canceling the majority of its remaining 2024-25 schedule due to ongoing repair efforts at Thalia Mara Hall.
The capital city venue has been shut down since August after mold was discovered in the facility. The city’s indoor air quality assessment confirmed that microbial activity was present likely due to a faulty heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system as well as roof leaks.
Jackson officials have been working with the State Fire Marshal’s Office to remedy these concerns. The state has also chipped in more than $1 million for restoration efforts. The city has since gotten a new air chiller for the theater, but it has yet to be installed. No timetable for the venue to be up and running again has been released at this time
“Dear season ticket holders, as you are no doubt aware, Thalia Mara Hall has been closed due to troublesome environmental and organic concerns that have rendered the venue unsafe to host events,” a release from Broadway in Jackson reads.
“We have been monitoring the situation closely since early August, and unfortunately, there is currently still no timeline for remediation of those concerns. As such, we must make several difficult decisions. With no other venue capable of hosting our direct-from-Broadway shows in the state of Mississippi, six of our seven season events will be canceled.”
Broadway in Jackson is the latest entity to cancel events in Thalia Mara Hall. In September, award-winning actor and comedian Kevin Hart nixed the two standup sessions he had previously scheduled to perform in the auditorium.
While the organization dedicated to bringing high-quality performing arts shows to Mississippi’s capital has axed six of its remaining productions, one of its holiday-themed musicals will still go on.
“We are pleased to report that, with a little creativity and the cooperation of the show’s producers, we will bring some holiday cheer with Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, now scheduled to appear at the Mississippi Coliseum on Friday, December 27th,” the release continued.
Broadway in Jackson is offering refunds to all patrons who renewed season tickets amid the uncertainty of when performances will resume at Thalia Mara Hall.
