Brookhaven High School was placed under lockdown temporarily on Wednesday morning due to a threat that was made off-campus.
According to Brookhaven Police Chief Kenneth Collins, an email from an outside source threatening gun violence against the school’s students and teachers was sent to school leaders. The Department of Homeland Security is currently working to trace the origin of the electronic message.
Rod Henderson, who serves as Superintendent for the Brookhaven School District, said that the Brookhaven Police Department (BPD) responded immediately to investigate the situation.
“We received an email from an outside source that we saw as needing to be investigated,” Superintendent Rod Henderson told The Daily Leader. “We placed the school on lockdown and notified BPD, who immediately responded and helped with our investigation. With the assistance of BPD, we found no cause to continue with the lockdown and resumed normal activities.”
The campus was locked down for approximately one hour to give law enforcement the opportunity to investigate the situation.
“Once the person who sent the email is identified, they will be arrested and charged with making a terrorist threat,” Collins said. “We take every threat like this seriously. We have to.”
