Authorities in the Mississippi Golden Triangle are investigating after a body was found in a burning car on Labor Day.

Lowndes County E-911 received a report of a body found at Luxapallila Creek Park just south of Columbus. Upon arrival, deputies with the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office located the body inside a vehicle that had been completely burned.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division were contacted and responded to the scene. At this time, detectives are treating this case as a homicide as the body was not in the driver’s seat of the vehicle when discovered. Police were unable to initially identify the deceased due to the burns the individual sustained.

The Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office will now be tasked with identifying the burning victim and determining an official cause of death.

Anyone with relevant information surrounding this case can contact the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office at (662)328-6788 or Golden Triangle Crime Stoppers at (1-800)530-7151. An undisclosed cash reward is available for information that leads to an arrest.
