The city of Canton is instituting a new curfew for youth in an attempt to to increase public safety and slow crime.

Canton Mayor William Truly set the curfew in motion on Tuesday for citizens 17 and under. The restrictions run from 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday.

Exceptions include minors commuting to and from work, returning from school activities, and traveling with consent from parents. Those who break the curfew will be released back to their parents after one offense but will be fined $250 for the second offense and $500 if the curfew is broken for a third time.

Truly also stated that Canton nightclubs will require proof of security and must close their doors by 1:00 a.m., along with businesses and apartment complexes being required to install security cameras.

Truly said the new curfew policy will be enforced on a month-to-month basis.

Canton’s announcement follows similar restrictions set by the cities of Jackson, West Point, and Vicksburg over the last year.
