For the time being, bars will be closing in the capital city due to concerns regarding COVID-19.
On Tuesday morning, Jackson Mayor Chokwe Lumumba issued an executive order saying all bars, taverns, nightclubs, and private lounges must close their doors by 11:50 p.m. Tuesday night—unless they offer takeout or delivery service.
Restaurant-wise, all bar tops must be closed to the public, however, employees can still work from behind the bar to serve alcoholic beverages to patrons at tables or curbside.
“I am committed to addressing the challenges that COVID-19 has wrought for an important sector of our business community. Although we are faced with difficult choices, we will always prioritize saving lives,” Lumumba said in a statement.
In the same order, Lumumba limits social gatherings to 10 people indoors and 20 outdoors.
As of now, the order will stay in effect until August 11.
