A bow has been tied on another successful weekend of college baseball in the Magnolia State. Ole Miss, Southern Miss, and Mississippi State all found series wins over nonconference opponents as conference play creeps around the corner.

Below, you can find a quick recap of each team’s series, scores from each game, plus the biggest moments from the weekend that was on the diamond.

No. 17 Ole Miss vs. Jacksonville State

The Rebels (14-1) remained red hot, taking all three games in Oxford over Jacksonville State by a combined score of 31-10. Ole Miss has now won 13 ballgames in a row, tying the program’s longest winning streak since Mike Bianco became head coach in 2000.

Scores

  • Game one: Ole Miss 7, Jacksonville State 4
  • Game two: Ole Miss 12, Jacksonville State 4
  • Game three: Ole Miss 13, Jacksonville State 2 (8)

Impact players

  • Ryan Moerman (6-for-14, 6 H, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 2 BB)
  • Austin Fawley (2-for-6, 2 HR, 2 RBI, 3 BB)
  • Luke Hill (3-for-6, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 BB)
  • Mason Morris (1 W, 4.2 IP, 0 ER, 7 K)
  • Riley Maddox (1 W, 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 2 K)

Big moment

Ryan Moerman was ready to go home early on Sunday. The senior outfielder walked it off in game three with a grand slam to give the Rebels the series sweep.

No. 20 Southern Miss vs. UNCW

Out of Mississippi’s three major programs, Southern Miss (11-5) had the toughest test when welcoming the University of North Carolina Wilmington to Hattiesburg. The Seahawks, who have made two consecutive NCAA Tournaments, could not fly as high as the Golden Eagles, though, as Christian Ostrander’s group won the final two games in a hard-fought series.

Scores

  • Game one: Southern Miss 3, UNCW 6
  • Game two: Southern Miss 2, UNCW 1
  • Game three: Southern Miss 7, UNCW 4

Impact players

  • Jake Cook (7-for-10, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 RBI)
  • Tucker Stockman (3-for-7, 2 R, 1 RBI)
  • Kros Sivley (ND, 7.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 K)
  • Colby Allen (W, SV, 4.0 IP, 0 ER, 6 K, 0 BB)

Big moment

After a Friday night loss, Southern Miss needed a hero on Saturday. They got one with Matthew Russo. In the bottom of the ninth, the junior first baseman homered to straightaway center to lift the Golden Eagles to a walk-off win in game two.

Mississippi State vs. Queens

Momentum from a dominant midweek showing against Southern Miss carried into the Bulldogs’ home series against Queens University. Mississippi State (11-4) used the weekend series to bounce back from a poor showing a week ago in the Astros Foundation Classic. The Bulldogs have now won four in a row.

Scores

  • Game one: Mississippi State 9, Queens 3
  • Game two: Mississippi State 10, Queens 2
  • Game three: Mississippi State 9, Queens 3

Impact players

  • Aaron Downs (5-for-6, 4 HR, 1 2B, 7 RBI)
  • Noah Sullivan (4-for-8, 1 HR, 1 2B, 3 RBI)
  • Pico Kohn (W, 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 9 K)
  • Ben Davis (W, 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 K)
  • Karson Ligon (W, 5.0 IP, 0 ER, 9 K)

Big moment

Who says highlights have to come from the batter’s box? Arguably the most impressive and easily the most aesthetically pleasing play of the weekend was when the Bulldogs turned two in game two.

What’s next?

All three teams will have nonconference action during the midweek before conference play begins this weekend.

On Tuesday, Ole Miss will play at South Alabama and Southern Miss will host the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Mississippi State will play Old Dominion on Tuesday and Nichols on Wednesday as part of the Hancock Whitney Classic at Keesler Federal Park in Biloxi.
