With Mississippi’s election season in full swing, the city of Starkville will be welcoming a new pool of cute and furry candidates to the city’s political scene.
Starkville residents and Mississippi State students living in the area will have the opportunity to nominate their dogs or cats to participate in the city’s inaugural pet election. 
Nominations are open until August 25. Registration is $50 per pet. The public will have from August 28 to September 15 to vote on Starkville’s very first pet mayor.
The pet mayor will serve as an ambassador of goodwill for Starkville for two years and will make occasional public appearances during his or her reign.
Runners-up will become the town’s “Fur Chief” (Fire Chief) or “Chief of Pawlice” (Chief of Police).
All proceeds from this event will benefit the Starkville Main Street Association and the city’s initiatives to make the downtown district and special events pet-friendly, as well as the work of the Oktibbeha County Humane Society.
