College football just got more interesting.

On Friday, the College Football Playoff’s executive board voted unanimously to expand the playoff field from four teams to 12 with the intention of implementing the expansion as soon as possible.

The board is hoping for the newly expanded 12-team bracket to go into effect as early as 2024.

Under the expanded format, the 12 playoff teams will be the six conference champions ranked highest by the selection committee plus the six remaining highest-ranking teams. The four highest-ranked conference champions will receive a first-round bye.

Additionally, the highest ranked of the remaining eight teams will host the lowest ranked teams in the first round. The games will either be located at the higher-seeded school’s campus or at a location chosen by the higher-ranked team.
