Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed Congresswoman Lisa McClain’s (R-MI) bill, which would posthumously award the Congressional Gold Medal to the 13 U.S. military servicemembers who were killed in Afghanistan on August 26, 2021.
Mississippi Congressman Michael Guest was an original cosponsor of the legislation.
“As our nation reels from the disaster in Afghanistan, we must pray for the families of our fallen heroes and continue to honor those servicemembers we have lost. This Congressional Gold Medal legislation is a token of the respect that Members of Congress have for these 13 brave men and women, and it would represent our promise to keep their names alive as heroes of our nation,” said Rep. Guest in a statement released September 1st.
The legislation would direct the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President pro tempore of the Senate to arrange the posthumous presentation of a single gold medal to the service members who perished in Afghanistan, on August 26, 2021.
