The Harrison County Coroner’s Office has confirmed the cause of death for the 4-month-baby boy that was kidnapped by a Louisiana murder suspect Monday.

The coroner stated that the baby, identified as La’Mello Parker, died as the result of a single gunshot wound after being rushed to the hospital following the shootout between law enforcement and the suspect 30-year-old Eric Derell Smith—the baby’s father.

No further details regarding the baby’s death are available at this time as the coroner prepares its final report that will be handed over to the district attorney’s office.

Smith, who was accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and her niece in East Baton Rouge, was also killed as a result of the shootout that began after he got stuck in the median on I-10 in Harrison County following a slow-speed chase.
