Overall hospitalizations in Mississippi have reached a new peak.
Amid rising case numbers, the state’s healthcare system is continuing to see an increased level of stress with hospitalizations now up to 1,008. State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs posted the update on Twitter, showing that Mississippi has surpassed its summer peak of 989.
New record in total COVID hospitalizations. And this is before an anticipated Thanksgiving acceleration. Many thanks to hospitals in maintaining adequate ICU care.

For six straight days, including this morning’s report, the state has seen over 1,000 new cases of COVID-19. Back in July, Dr. Dobbs detailed what that means for the state’s hospitals.
“Every day that we add 1,000 new cases, statistically, that’s another 170 patients that are likely going to be in the hospital in the next couple of weeks,” he said at the time.
The MSDH continues to urge you to take the proper precautions to slow the spread of the virus to ensure that the healthcare system doesn’t become overwhelmed.
“We must keep our healthcare system from being forced to choose how gets treatment and who doesn’t,” a message from the MSDH states.
These steps include wearing a mask, avoiding large social gatherings and practicing social distancing.
“A simple solution now that can prevent cruel calculations later,” the MSDH message concluded.
We’ve returned to the serious shortage of hospital care that we saw in the summer. Mississippians took swift measures to turn that situation around then. We need to do it again now. Avoid crowds, keep gatherings small, socially distance, and wear a mask.https://t.co/aTLEwCSPnq

Currently, half of Mississippi’s 82 counties have been placed under the governor’s “Safe Recovery” placing a mask mandate and stricter guidelines on hotspot areas. Governor Reeves has continued to oppose a statewide mask mandate despite calls from some of the state’s leading medical experts.
