Deion Sanders named head football coach at Colorado

Within hours of securing a consecutive SWAC championship victory, Jackson State’s Deion Sanders has been announced as Colorado’s next head football coach.

Sanders will be replacing Karl Dorrell, who was fired on October 2 after the Buffaloes started the season winless through the first five games.

“There were a number of highly qualified and impressive candidates interested in becoming the next head football coach at Colorado, but none of them had the pedigree, the knowledge, and the ability to connect with student-athletes like Deion Sanders,” Colorado Athletics Director Rick George said. “Not only will Coach Prime energize our fanbase, I’m confident that he will lead our program back to national prominence while leading a team of high quality and high character.”

During his tenure at Jackson State, Sanders compiled a 27-5 record, led the Tigers to their first-ever undefeated regular season, and set up his team to represent the SWAC in two Cricket Celebration Bowl games. Sanders also catapulted JSU to national relevance and had the team featured on College GameDay for the first time in school history.

Now, Coach Prime will have the opportunity to compete in the Pac-12, a power five conference.
