Elsa won’t impact Mississippi, downgraded to Tropical Storm

In addition to being downgraded to a tropical storm, Elsa’s projected path has shifted back to the east as the storm nears the Gulf of Mexico.

While it was initially unclear if Mississippi would feel any effects of the approaching storm, the latest models from the National Hurricane Center show that Elsa will likely make landfall in Florida before taking a turn east. It will then move through Georgia and the Carolinas before moving along the coast.

What became the first hurricane of the 2021 season was downgraded to a tropical storm Saturday, but it is still capable of producing 70 mph winds.

While Elsa won’t impact Mississippi barring a sudden turn, now is the time ensure your hurricane plan is in place in the event that a storm does head our way. This includes knowing your evacuation route and building a disaster kit. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency suggests the following items to be included in your kit:

  • Flashlight(s) with extra batteries.
  • Portable radio with extra batteries.
  • NOAA Weather Radio.
  • Non-perishable food for at least 3 days.
  • Bottled water (1 gallon per person per day).
  • First Aid Kit with prescription medications.
  • Bedding and clothing for each family member.
  • Blankets and towels.
  • Plastic dishes/eating utensils.
  • Rain Jackets/pants.
  • Sun screen/sunglasses/mosquito repellent.
  • Baby supplies (food, diapers, medication).
  • Pet supplies (food, leash & carrier, vaccination records).
  • Sanitary supplies.
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, cleanser, bleach, towelettes, toilet paper, trash bags, feminine hygiene products.
  • Copies of important documents.
  • Driver license, SS card, proof of residence, insurance policies, wills, deeds, birth and marriage certificates, tax records, medical records, family pictures, etc.
  • Cash, enough to fill up your vehicle with gas and travelers checks.
  • Emergency generator.
  • Bicycle helmet.
