The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a helicopter crash that occurred near Tombigbee State Park.

First reported by WTVA, the crash occurred on State Park Road near Plantersville. Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson confirmed to the local TV station that the pilot, who owned the helicopter, had departed the Tupelo Regional Airport en route to his home when the helicopter went down into a lake on private property.

The unidentified male pilot was able to swim to safety. Medics took him to a local hospital out of fear that his body may have become numb in the cold water, causing him to be unsure of potential injuries the crash may have caused.

No further details have been provided at this time.
