Fire started in yard of Monroe County home kills elderly woman

An elderly Monroe County woman has passed away after starting a brush fire in her yard.

Monroe County Coroner Alan Gurley reports that Annie Robertson, 83, died Tuesday night in the Egypt community of Aberdeen due to smoke inhalation.

A neighbor of the elderly woman called authorities around 6:34 p.m. after seeing a trailer on fire across the road from his residence. Cedar Creek Fire Department responded to the fire. Upon arrival, the trailer was fully engulfed in flames.

At 7:11 p.m. firefighters notified police that a person, later identified as Robertson, had been discovered deceased. The woman been seen earlier cleaning the property and burning some brush.

Nobody currently lives in the trailer behind her home.

The fire, which is said to have been very intense and spread fast, is under investigation by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department and the State Fire Marshall’s Office. No autopsy for Robertson is planned.
