3,000 submissions have now been narrowed to nine following Friday morning’s meeting of the Mississippi flag commission.
Today’s meeting was originally supposed to produce a final five voted upon by the nine-member commission, but they decided to delay that vote until Tuesday at 8 a.m.
The meeting began with the nine-member commission discussing 11 flag designs and making alight alterations to several of them. Several designs were eliminated and alternate versions of two flags were created. The screenshot from the meeting below shows the final nine designs that are currently being considered.
*Slight alterations may be made to each of the designs. A more detailed look at each design will be made available later today by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
Early on in the meeting, MDAH Executive Director Katie Blount stated that they have received a large volume of emails in support of the ‘Great River Flag‘ (#9 in the above picture).
Additionally, the commission voted to adopt an agreement that the original submitter of a design must sign to avoid copyright issues down the road.
Following the upcoming vote, an official public comment period will begin on August 25th. The commission must submit their design to the Secretary of State’s Office by September 14th ahead of the November 3rd election.
The commission’s choice must receive a majority of the vote on election day in order to be adopted as the new state flag—replacing the flag was recently retired by the Mississippi Legislature.
