A former Coahoma County deputy coroner is being accused of embezzlement.

Special agents with the Mississippi State Auditor’s Office handcuffed Markeith Mosely on Tuesday. Between June 2021 and November 2023, Mosley is alleged to have fraudulently claimed a Fuelman gas card belonging to the county as his own while serving as coroner.

The amount of money allegedly spent on non-government-related purchases was not disclosed by the state auditor.

“We will continue to hold the line when it comes to fraud, whether it be big or small,” State Auditor Shad White said. “We will continue to work with prosecutors to make sure that taxpayer money is protected.”

If convicted Mosley faces up to $25,000 in fines and up to 10 years in prison.
