Former Gautier police officer pleads guilty after using city gas card for personal vehicle

A former Gautier police officer has been sentenced after pleading guilty to embezzling funds from the city’s gas card for his personal vehicle.

According to the State Auditor’s Office, Eric Maye had repeatedly used Gautier’s FuelMan card to buy gasoline for his own car despite the card being intended to be used to purchase fuel for the city-owned police vehicle.

Maye was arrested by agents in January 2023 and issued a $1,433.32 demand letter, later pleading guilty to the embezzlement charge.

He has since been sentenced to serve five years of house arrest followed by five years of post-release supervision, as well as been ordered to pay restitution and fines.

Maye’s sentence will run concurrently with a conviction from a case investigated by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations. Both cases were prosecuted by District Attorney Angel McIlrath’s office.

No surety bond covers Maye’s employment as a Gautier Police Officer, meaning that he will remain liable for the full amount of the demand in addition to criminal proceedings.
