Former Mississippi House Speaker Philip Gunn, who helped pass a long list of economic bills during his time behind the gavel, will now play a role in future economic development projects in Hinds County.

On Monday, the Hinds County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to add Gunn to the Hinds County Economic Development Board as a representative for District 3. Gunn’s appointment is effective immediately as he replaces Jared Turner.

Gunn stepped away from the legislature after choosing not to seek reelection in 2023. In February, it was announced that the former speaker had joined Balch Policy Advisors, LLC as part of the firm’s public policy and government relations team.

Gunn, a Republican, was first elected to the legislature in 2003, representing portions of Hinds and Madison counties. In 2012, his peers selected him as speaker, a post he held until January when lawmakers reconvened for a new session.
