Gov. Tate Reeves has ordered all flags to fly half-staff on Sunday in honor of fallen Hinds County Deputy Martin Shields, Jr.

“Mississippi is grieving the loss of a hero. Hinds County Sheriff’s Deputy Martin Shields Jr. bravely served his community and we will always remember his sacrifice,” Reeves wrote on social media. “In his honor, all flags across the state will be flown at half-staff on Sunday, March 2.”

Shields, 37, was responding to a domestic services call on Midway Road in Terry on the night of Feb. 23 when Eric Brown, 42, shot and killed the officer. Brown shot two others, confirmed by law enforcement to be his wife and a “female accomplice,” before turning the gun on himself. He and Shields were both found dead on the scene, while the other shooting victims are expected to recover.

Shields was laid to rest in Jackson on Saturday, with members of the law enforcement community and elected officials joining family members and friends to honor him. He had been with the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office for nine months.
