Governor Tate Reeves is vowing to sign postpartum Medicaid extension into law if passed by the Mississippi legislature.
In a Sunday afternoon Twitter post, Reeves argues that in order for Mississippi to be a better place to raise kids, lawmakers have to be willing to make “philosophically uncomfortable” decisions such as extending postpartum coverage from 60 days to 12 months.
“The legislature should pass a law continuing this 12 months of postpartum coverage…and if they do, I will sign it into law,” Reeves wrote.

On Feb. 8, the Senate passed a bill extending postpartum Medicaid coverage. It has since been referred by House Speaker Philip Gunn — an outspoken critic of the idea — to the House Medicaid Committee.
Mississippi and Wyoming are the only states that do not currently have an extension of postpartum benefits or a full expansion of Medicaid.
