2021 had it’s share of challenges for everyone, including the Grammy Museum Mississippi. Despite the obstacles presented by the pandemic, their staff succeeded in fulfilling the Museum’s education mission through virtual programming, in-person programming, and utilizing Zoom.
As we look toward 2022, Executive Director Emily Havens recapped the accomplishments of the past year:
Here is the Museum’s 2021 story:- We curated and opened our first exhibition, MTV Turns Forty: I Still Want My MTV honoring Mississippi’s own Bob Pittman and featuring a video lounge, interactives, interviews with the VJs and incredible artifacts from MTV and the artists that made MTV.
- We hosted our sixth week-long summer camp for students ages 9-14 and ages 15-20 and free of charge.
- We hosted school groups from all over Mississippi for Museum tours and workshops.
- We presented many public programs, live music festival, Fitbeat Series, and Family Days free of charge for the community.
- We connected young musicians from all over the world through our virtual songwriting workshops.
- We presented our second state-wide educator award, The L.U.C.Y. Award – Lifting Up Children and Youth to Joe Raymond of Wayne County.
- We honored GRAMMY Winner Marty Stuart with the Crossroads of American Music Award.
Havens hopes to accomplish even more in 2022:
We plan to continue our education mission by hosting even more tours and workshops. In January, the Museum will host a 21-week guitar program for students in Mound Bayou. We have plans to launch a Sensory Friendly program in March and to host our seventh summer camp in June. We also look forward to hosting public programs for members and the community, opening new exhibits, updating artifacts and exhibits. We will continue to celebrate educators, Museum members and volunteers. In the fall, we will once again host our annual gala, and throughout the year, the community can look forward to Family Day events and health programs. We also have plans for a big surprise in 2022.
As the new year begins, we hope you will consider supporting the Museum by donating to our mission of promoting music education or even joining the Museum as a Member. Remember, your Museum membership is an investment in music education and your community. Music is filled with hope, dreams, and aspirations. With your help, we can inspire future creators of music.
