The struggles continue at Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
On Tuesday, hospital officials announced they are permanently closing the labor and delivery unit, requesting expectant mothers in the area to plan accordingly.
“If you are having contractions, make arrangements to visit another hospital that is providing Labor and Delivery services,” a Facebook post from Greenwood Leflore read. “For the health and safety of you and your unborn child, it is vital that before you have adequate time to get to another hospital.”
Just last month, 20 full-time and 20 part-time employees at Greenwood Leflore Hospital were laid off, adding to the 30 employees that were forced to leave the hospital in May. According to CEO Gary Marchand, the goal is to remain open through the end of the calendar year as the University of Mississippi Medical Center has submitted a bid to lease out the hospital.
The layoffs were announced weeks after the hospital, which is one of the Mississippi Delta’s largest, was forced to temporarily close due to a defective sewage line.
