Greenwood Leflore Hospital has partially reopened following a defective sewage line.
The hospital, which is one of the Mississippi Delta’s largest, closed last Monday after it was discovered that manholes were clogged, forcing sewage into the crawl space below the hospital.
Now that the sewage lines have been unclogged and the Mississippi State Department of Health has approved the reopening of outpatient services while providing a plan to clean up the hospital’s sewer problem, most clinics inside the hospital have re-opened and returned to normal business hours.
Greenwood Leflore Hospital, for the time being, is not accepting any new patients and has delayed the reopening of inpatient services.

“It is true that the delay in re-opening inpatient services will mean we will be limited to performing certain types of procedures. Any surgeries that require or could possibly require an overnight stay, will not be performed during this time at Greenwood Leflore Hospital; however, the amount of surgeries requiring an overnight stay are a small percentage of our overall surgeries,” Director of Surgical Services Kimberly Self said, adding that 84% of the hospital’s surgeries over the last few years have been done on an outpatient basis.
As of Tuesday morning, no timeline had been released for the return of inpatient care at Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
