Congressman Michael Guest (MS-03) has joined a resolution as an original cosponsor supporting the removal of the Russian Federation from its seat as a permanent member of the United Nations (UN) Security Council.
The resolution, introduced by Congressman Dan Crenshaw (TX-03), expresses that the Russian Federation did not legitimately inherit the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics’ (USSR) seat on the UN Security Council following the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.
The resolution would formally announce that the United States House of Representatives does not recognize the Russian Federation as the inheritor of the USSR’s UN Security Council seat.
“I fully support any measure by the UN to remove the Russian Federation from the security council,” Guest said. “Russia’s removal would be an important step if the UN is to be taken seriously as a global peacekeeping organization.”
Congressman Crenshaw expressed his support for the move in a Twitter thread that opens, “Kick Russia out of the UN Security Council. They should not have a veto vote. Period.”
In the resolution, the Members also argue that Russia has violated Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the Charter of the United Nations when the country invaded the sovereign nation of Ukraine. The referenced section of the charter reads, “All Members shall refrain in their international relations from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State.”
Congressman Guest condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine in a statement released last week.
“Last night, Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale invasion into the autonomous country of Ukraine. Despite his attempts to justify this direct breach of international law through falsehoods and lies, the world understands this move for what it is — a reckless and evil attempt to seize control of a sovereign and democratic country. The consequences of weak leadership during this time will result in devastating consequences for the world. If peace and democracy are to prevail, the United States and NATO must issue swift and crippling economic sanctions against Russia and its leaders responsible for these clear actions of war. I fully condemn Russia’s attack on Ukraine, and I stand ready to join our leaders in Washington and across the world in holding Putin accountable for his actions.”
