The mayor of Heidelberg, David Taylor II, has died at the age of 42.
According to the Jasper County Coroner’s Office, first responders answered a medical call to the Taylor home where the mayor was pronounced dead at 8:21 p.m. Medical personnel conducted cardio-pulmonary resuscitation but were unable to revive Taylor.
“From our whole department, our deepest condolences go out to his family,” Heidelberg Police Department Assistant Chief Cornell White said.
After graduating from Heidelberg High School and earning degrees from Alcorn State University and William Carey University, Taylor served as a public school teacher for 14 years. He was sworn in as the mayor of the 609-person town in 2021 and was serving in the final year of his first term.
Taylor is survived by his wife and two children.
