Highway Patrol issues nearly 5,000 citations during New Year’s travel period

The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) has concluded its New Year’s Holiday Period, reporting 4,865 citations issued across the state in three days.

From Saturday morning to midnight on Monday, the MHP made 77 arrests for impaired driving and investigated 119 crashes.

“The goal of our troopers was to promote safe travel and reduce the number of crashes, specifically fatal crashes over the New Year Holiday weekend,” Captain Criss Turnipseed said. “We are proud of those efforts and look forward to continuing this mission throughout 2024.”

During that time, 21 injuries were reported, along with one death as a result of one fatal crash. The crash occurred at approximately 12:31 a.m. on Monday, January 1 on Highway 607 in Hancock County. The incident is currently being investigated by the MHP.
