Three people are dead and eight are injured as gunfire erupted at a homecoming trail party in Holmes County.

The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office told WLBT that it received a phone call after midnight on Saturday about a shooting on Highway 17. Sheriff Willie March told the TV station that after a homecoming football game on Friday night, a large group of “young people” decided to throw a party on a nearby trail ride.

The festivities turned violent when partygoers got into a fight and guns were drawn. Shots were then fired, killing three people. The deceased have since been identified as Martel Gibson, 25, Shundra Chestnut, 19, and John Jenkins, 19.

Eight other victims were transported to various hospitals to be treated for injuries received during the incident.

The case is still under investigation as no suspect information has been released by the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office at this time.
