More than two years after the body of Ebony Owens was found in the Big Black River, a Hinds County jury has found the woman’s husband guilty of killing her.
Michael Owens, 36, was convicted of first-degree murder and third-degree arson on Monday. Though Owens admitted to shooting his spouse in the head, he contended that he did so in self-defense. That argument was rejected by jurors.
A search for the victim began on March 15, 2023, after she did not show up for work, and when authorities discovered her burned vehicle near Old Highway 80 and Jones Road in Edwards, this prompted the arson charges against the suspect. Ebony Owens’ body was found 10 days later.
Michael Owens will now serve a life sentence in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
