Hyde-Smith, colleagues move to extend National Flood Insurance Program

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is set to expire on September 30, so Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith is helping to introduce legislation to authorize a one-year extension. More than five million American families and businesses—including over 60,000 policyholders in Mississippi—depend on coverage from the program, which FEMA administers.

The NFIP Extension Act of 2022 (S.4533) would extend the program through September 30, 2023.

“I look forward to a time when Congress will agree on a long-term reauthorization of the NFIP.  Until then, I recognize the importance of the NFIP to many Mississippi families and businesses and will act to see that the program does not lapse,” Hyde-Smith said.

U.S. Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) introduced the extension measure, with Senators Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-La.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) as additional original cosponsors.

In November 2021, Hyde-Smith cosponsored a five-year NFIP reauthorization bill that includes reforms to assist policyholders and ensure the program’s long-term success.
