The suspect accused of shooting and killing a George County Deputy reportedly died of a self-inflicted fatal gunshot wound.

An investigation conducted by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation reveals that 43-year-old Rickey Labaron Powell shot and killed himself after taking the life of Jeremy Malone during a traffic stop in early January.

Malone is reported to have initiated a traffic stop with a subject yet to be identified by law enforcement at a location on Highway 98 in Lucedale. While the deputy was approaching the vehicle, the subject opened gunfire and fled the scene before ultimately taking his own life.

Powell had a 25-year rap sheet across both Mississippi and Alabama, which included multiple charges involving burglary, forgery, assault, illegal weapons possession, and drug charges.

Malone was buried on Jan. 12 and was honored for his service as a law enforcement officer.
