A member of the Jackson City Council has resigned from her post.

Ward 2 Councilwoman Angelique Lee made the unexpected announcement Wednesday morning. During a brief press conference, Council President Virgi Lindsay announced she had accepted the resignation “with a heavy heart,” but reiterated that the governing body would continue to conduct its routine duties.

“My intent today is to reassure the people of the city of Jackson that urgent legislative affairs of the city will continue uninterrupted,” Lindsay said. “I know our citizens to be resilient, resourceful, and generous. We are no strangers to challenge.”

Lee assumed her role on the city council back in December 2020. Her term was set to expire in July 2025. Though the councilwoman was not present at the press conference, she did provide a written statement regarding her resignation.

“Circumstances that I am not at liberty to discuss at the moment have led to this decision,” Lee wrote. “I will greatly miss working with each of you and I am proud of the work that we have done as a collective body for the city of Jackson and its citizens.”

Under state law, the city council is now required to meet within the next 10 days and order a special election which will be held between 30 and 45 days from the date of the meeting.

City of Jackson Communications Director Melissa Faith Payne said Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba’s office would be releasing a statement later on Wednesday.
