Jackson man arrested after stealing police car

A man has been arrested after taking a Jackson Police cruiser for a joy ride over the weekend.

According to the Jackson Police Department, the incident happened Sunday around 2 a.m. in the 1220 block of Violet Street. The subject, who JPD identified as 25-year-old Trevin Bell, jumped into the officer’s patrol car and left the scene.

Officers said Bell suffers from “extreme mental illness” and was off his medication when he decided to steal the vehicle. He was pulled over on Martin Luther King Boulevard near Medgar Evers Boulevard. No weapon was inside the vehicle when it was stolen.

Bell was taken into custody and is now facing charges.
