One of Mississippi’s largest healthcare facilities for veterans is getting a major facelift.
Officials with the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center in Jackson announced Thursday that the hospital will soon begin infrastructure upgrades with the goal of making patient care safer and more efficient. The upgrades will come in the form of a primary care clinic being repurposed to create a modernized women’s health center, along with improvements within the interventional radiology department.
Other updates will include modernizing electronic health records, renovating the nutrition and food service kitchen that prepares meals for patients, and restroom maintenance throughout the hospital. No estimated timeline has been provided for when these projects will begin and be completed by.
“Improved facilities, equipment, and infrastructure mean better care for Veterans, and these funds will enable the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center to achieve that goal,” Executive Director Michael Renfrow said. “Better care for Veterans is our goal, and these projects will enable us to achieve just that.”
The projects at the Jackson medical center are part of a record $4.8 billion in nationwide VA spending to modernize, repair, and improve department health care facilities. It is the largest-ever single-year investment through the federal government’s Non-Recurring Maintenance program.
“Under President Trump, VA is putting Veterans first, and this historic investment underscores that fact,” VA Secretary Doug Collins said. “Improved facilities, equipment, and infrastructure mean better care for Veterans, and these funds will enable VA to achieve that goal.”
The G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center provides comprehensive mental health, surgical, and long-term care to over 50,000 unique veterans annually, treating service members and retired armed forces members in more than 80% of Mississippi, along with parts of Alabama and Louisiana.
