The Mississippi Department of Health (MSDH) has released that the visible flame near the O.B. Curtis Water Plant is in relation to a repair of an ammonia leak that was identified later this week.
According to the MSDH, the flare will be used to conduct a controlled burn-off of the gas while the product is being transferred and the leaking tank is repaired.
Officials have stated that the repair will take place intermittently throughout the day and serves no threat to the public.
“Again, there is no danger to the public through this controlled burn,” said Jim Craig, MSDH Senior Deputy and Director of Health Protection. “This will put us one step closer to bringing safe and sustainable water to the citizens of Jackson.”
