Agents with the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation have arrested a Jones County reserve sheriff’s deputy for his role in a shooting that took place outside of a Laurel church on Sunday.

George Ryan Walters is charged with second-degree murder in connection to the shooting incident at Rock Church.

Walters, who is a member of the church and its security team, was involved in an altercation with 45-year-old James Corey Donald in the church’s parking lot. The incident ended with Donald being shot and later succumbing to his injuries.

Prior to his arrest, Walters was placed on administrative leave from his position as a reserve deputy as MBI continued to look into the shooting.

According to investigators, Walters surrendered himself to authorities on Wednesday and has been booked into the Jones County Adult Detention Facility.

Upon the investigation’s completion, agents will share their findings with the Simpson County District Attorney’s Office.
