JSU alum becomes first Black woman to win Oscar for ‘Makeup and Hairstyling’

A Jackson State alum made history during last night’s 93rd annual Academy Awards.

Mia Neal, along with Jamika Wilson, won the Oscar for ‘Makeup and Hairstyling’ for her work on Netflix’s ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.’ Neal served as the film’s hair and wig designer and hair department chief. According to NRP, she created 100 wigs for the film starring Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman.

In her acceptance speech, Neal spoke of the shattering of a glass ceiling as the pair became the first Black women to take home on Oscar in this category.

Neal and Wilson were also the first to be nominated in the category.
