The largest cruise ship to ever travel down the Mississippi River made stops in Vicksburg and Natchez this week as it reaches the end of its journey in a few days.
On Thursday morning, Viking’s cruise ship named Viking Mississippi successfully stopped in Natchez, granting city officials to hold a celebratory welcome for the 250 passengers and crew aboard the vessel.
During the ceremony, Viking Mississippi’s company consultant David Simmons and the boat’s captain met with Natchez Mayor Dan Gibson, with the two later presenting Gibson with a model replica of the cruise ship. The replica will be displayed at the Natchez City Hall.
Currently, the vessel is conducting a 15-day trip down the Mississippi River, starting in St. Paul, Minnesota, and ending in New Orleans.
“It is a proud moment that this new ship has met an American waterway for the first time,” Torstein Hagen, chairman of Viking, said. “Our guests have long wanted to sail the Mississippi River with Viking.”
The 450 feet in length and 75 feet in width ship is said to be able to hold a maximum of 386 guests in 193 staterooms. Each room features a balcony or veranda, a king-size bed, a flat-screen television, a mini-bar, and a bathroom with heated floors. A few other features of the ship include a sun terrace with a pool, a café, and a lounge with a bar.
Additional trips include:
- New Orleans & Southern Charms – six tours throughout New Orleans
- Heart of the Delta – five tours from New Orleans to Memphis
- Mississippi Holiday Season – five tours from New Orleans to Memphis
- America’s Heartland – six tours from St. Louis to St. Paul
