Mississippians in the northern to central parts of the state might see a bit of snow at the end of the week, as temperatures are anticipated to range from the single digits to near freezing.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the period of dangerously cold weather is expected to bring cold winds, a slight chance of precipitation, and freezing from Thursday night to Saturday night. The NWS added that the most severe weather throughout the state will be on Thursday night as winds will likely result in wind chill readings below zero.
The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is also warning those who will be traveling during the period of cold weather to be cautious and alert for any dangerous conditions while driving on the roads. MDOT also suggests to avoid using cruise control on icy roads, as well as braking early to prevent skidding.
Here are some tips on how to prepare your car for the winter weather:
- Have your car battery and charging system checked for optimum performance.
- Clean, flush, and put new antifreeze in your car’s cooling system.
- Have your brakes checked.
- Make sure the heater, defroster, and windshield wipers work properly.
- Check the tire pressure weekly during the winter months.
- Make sure your inside lights are working and your headlights are aimed properly.
- Change your oil and oil filter at the recommended intervals.
- Make sure the exhaust system has no leaks. Carbon monoxide can accumulate quickly in closed vehicles.
If you plan on leaving your home for the holidays, make sure to prepare for possible water main breaks and damage to exposed pipes. Check the latest forecast updates before traveling and prepare accordingly for the cold weather episode in case of an emergency.
