A Summit man has been locked up for illegally possessing firearms after calling authorities to report that some of his guns had been stolen.

According to the Pike County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO), Thomas “Tommy” Brister called authorities and claimed that someone had taken firearms from his residence. Brister showed deputies a safe in his home that contained other guns.

Deputies conducted a criminal history search, and it showed that Brister was a convicted felon and was prohibited from possessing any type of firearm.

PCSO’s Criminal Investigations Division was notified, and a search warrant was executed at the residence. Brister was arrested and booked into the Pike County Jail and charged with 17 counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Brister has a prior criminal history. The Summit native was previously convicted of two counts of simple assault on a law enforcement officer.

He successfully petitioned a court to have his gun rights restored in 2010. However, on May 17, 2012, Brister was convicted and sentenced for failure to support minor children and lost his firearm rights again.

No bond has been set for Brister at this time.
