A Mobile, Ala. man has pled guilty after shooting a Moss Point police dog earlier this year.
On March 29, Moss Point Police officers responded to an alarm call at the Shell Station located on Highway 63. Upon arrival, they found Richard J. McGuire behind another business. McGuire immediately fled when officers approached him.
Moss Point police K9 “Buddy” was released to track the suspect. Buddy pursued McGuire into a wooded area when officers heard two gunshots. Buddy returned to them with two gunshots in the chest.
Officers later apprehended McGuire, 44, and found that he was in possession of a sawed-off shotgun, the weapon which was used to shoot Buddy.
McGuire will be sentenced on November 15. He is facing a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison for possession of a firearm as a convicted felon as well as seven years for animal crushing.
Fortunately, Buddy survived and will return to work soon.
