A traffic stop in north Mississippi led to the discovery of large quantities of drugs and paraphernalia from a suspect claiming to be transporting medical supplies across the country.
On Sunday, troopers with the Mississippi Highway Patrol pulled a vehicle over in Pontotoc County for careless driving. The driver stated he was traveling from California to deliver medical supplies to a location in North Carolina — but officers quickly discovered that medical supplies were, in fact, not what was being transported.
Assistance from a police K-9 guided officers to find 1,200 pounds of marijuana, 5,500 suspected items of drug paraphernalia, and 20 pounds of cannabis concentrate concealed in a vault at the back of the van.
The unidentified driver has since been charged with trafficking marijuana and distribution of paraphernalia. Trafficking controlled substances in the state of Mississippi carries a penalty of imprisonment for a term between 10 and 40 years and a fine between $5,000 and $1 million.
