The Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) executive committee voted on Thursday to add a 7A classification to high school sports.

Brandon Shields of Mississippi Gridiron, who first reported the news, tweeted a picture explaining how the new reclassification cycle will take place.

The state’s largest 72 schools, in terms of enrollment, will make up classes 5A through 7A. Each class of 24 schools will have four regions. Classes 2A through 4A will each have 40 schools and eight regions. Class 1A will have the rest divided into eight regions.

The 2023-2024 school year will be the first year with the new classifications.
