Millions of Stanley cups, the popular stainless steel travel mugs, have been recalled due to a burn hazard.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, Stanley issued a recall of 2.6 million Switchback and Trigger Action mugs due to a defect causing burn injuries. The recall was issued after numerous reports of the lids shrinking “when exposed to heat and torque,” causing “the lid to detach during use, posing a burn hazard,” the CPSC said on Thursday.
The affected mugs have been sold in the U.S. and other countries, resulting in 38 burn injuries (16 of the reports and two of the injuries came were filed by U.S. customers). Of the people hurt, 11 required medical attention.
The affected Stanley cups were sold at Amazon, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Walmart, Target, and other retailers over the last eight years for a price tag of $20 to $50. They were sold in various sizes and colors. The recalled mugs have one of the following product identification numbers on the bottom: 20-01437, 20-01436, 20-02211, 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825, 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957, 20-02034 or 20-02746.
Those with in possession of recalled cups are asked to immediately stop using the mugs and contact Stanley to receive a free replacement lid. In a Facebook post, Stanley provided information on how to do so.
