The state of Mississippi has been the recipient of nearly $7 million in grant funding from the Department of Justice’s Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Office.
In all, a total of $6,972,455 in awards will be distributed across the state through several grant programs, which include the COPS Hiring Program (CHP), School Violence Prevention Program (SVPP), and Community Policing Development (CPD).
CHP focuses on hiring hundreds of entry-level career law enforcement officers in an attempt to create and preserve jobs, as well as increase crime prevention efforts and community policing capacity.
SVPP allocates funding to school districts, state and local governments, and other public agencies to improve security at schools and on school grounds, while CPD involves the implementation of support crisis intervention teams, de-escalation training, accreditation efforts, and community policing strategies.
