Mississippi confirms fourth case of monkeypox as state awaits more vaccines

Another case of monkeypox has been confirmed in Mississippi, bringing the state’s total number of cases to four.

As for vaccine availability, State Epidemiologist Dr. Paul Byers explained during a recent press conference that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working diligently to deliver additional doses of the JYNNEOS monkeypox vaccine to Mississippi.

“Currently, CDC is working on the next phase of vaccine distribution,” Byers said. “We do expect additional doses, but we really don’t know how many we might get.”

On Monday, the CDC designated monkeypox as a nationally notifiable condition, which means states have just 24 hours post-discovery to report all suspected and confirmed cases to the agency.

The first case of monkeypox in Mississippi was reported on July 25. If a person is exposed to the virus, they are encouraged to contact their local provider. The Mississippi State Department of Health will then work with the provider to collect a sample and get the person vaccinated, if necessary.
