It’s been 21 years since the tragic events that unfolded on September 11, 2001, but the impact and the memory of that day continue to be felt in Mississippi and across the country.
As millions looked on from the ground, the United States was attached as terrorists carried out a plot that left thousands dead. As the hijacked planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and later into a field in Shanksville, Pa., families were torn apart, lives were lost, and the nation’s sense of security was shaken.
On that day, first responders ran towards the chaos and began to rescue those trapped inside the rubble, putting their own lives on the line to help others in need. Today, the nation remembers the 2,977 people who lost their lives on that tragic day and thanks those who continue to defend America’s freedom each and every day.
Mississippi elected officials have been taking to social media throughout the day to share their commemorations.
The years may pass, but we’ll never forget the terrorist attacks committed on 9/11.
We continue to mourn those lost and honor those who stood up to respond to the attacks and defend our nation in the years that followed.

21 years ago, terrorists intended to strike fear in the heart of our nation. And yet, the evil that the terrorists thought would cripple us only revealed our true strength. pic.twitter.com/qo1aRGTHJF

Each year, when the calendar shows September 11, we set aside what problems we face as a nation to come together, pause, observe and remember that terrible day and all that we lost. And we will never forget. #911RemembranceDay #NeverForget911 pic.twitter.com/6CPfvihTla

Last year on 9/11, I pulled over on Highway 45 in Tupelo to get this photo. This is the American spirit we all treasure. Americans of all stripes and beliefs rise up together and remember those whose lives were lost in the attacks on our nation 21 years ago today. #unitedwestand pic.twitter.com/KEY2HOYVVk
